Safety Tips
With summer fast approaching, more and more cyclists are out on the roads. It’s important to remember that not everyone on a bike has extensive cycling skills, but we do all need to be safe together. If you’re a strong cyclist, consider yourself a road safety ambassador and share your knowledge with new riders where you can. If you’re less experienced, or your skills are a bit rusty, don’t be afraid to ask questions, or even join a bike club. www.rideabike.com.au
Cycling Events Calendar
If you need a reason to get on your bike, a cycling event in your local area could be the inspiration you’re looking for. The AGF is the benefiting charity of several rides around the country – to find out what’s happening click here or visit one of the following websites:
- Lake Macquarie Games Kermesse, Sunday 9 November
- SUB Women’s Cycle Challenge St Kilda, Saturday 6 December
Scody Teams Plus – Sunday 16 November
Teams Plus is your chance to test yourself against the clock. Individuals and teams will be timed over 66 spectacular kilometres from Mornington to Flinders, including the challenge of Arthur's Seat. If you’re keen you can ride back to Mornington, making it a 112 km round trip. There is also a 60 km ride that doesn’t include Arthur’s Seat. This shorter ride won’t be timed so there’ll be plenty of time to cruise along by the beach, visit a café or one of the Mornington Peninsula’s famous wineries.
$5 from every entry is donated to the AGF, so register today on the Scody Teams Plus website. Get in quick for early bird specials.
Cycling News
Cyclist-motorist road safety was in the media recently due to an incident reported on the morning of the annual Around the Bay in a Day in Victoria. A group of cyclists was travelling to the event in a bike lane on the Nepean Highway when it is alleged that the driver of a motor vehicle deliberately drove towards the group, hitting the front rider and causing the group to come off their bikes. A deliberate act such as this highlights the need for increased community education and awareness – when drivers and cyclists respect each other the roads are safer for everyone.
Get Involved
It’s never been easier to help keep the roads safe – you just need a credit card. The AGF has a new online donation facility, so if you want to sponsor a fundraiser, join Club 500 or make a donation to our road safety programs, simply click here.
